O you who believe, when the call to prayer is made on ' yawmil-jumuah' hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off all business. That is better for you, if you know (62:9)
In Arabic yawmil-jumuah literally means the day of congregation.
This day (i.e. Friday) is also known as:
Sayyidul-ayyaam the master of all days. In Islam, just as Makkah is the most preferred city and Ramadhan is the most blessed month, Friday is superior to the other six days of the week.
The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) has said:
"Friday is the master of all the (other) days, and its greatness with Allah is more than the day of Adha and the day of Fitr".
Yawmul-Eid, the day of rejoicing. Imam Ali bin Abi Talib (A.S.) has been reported saying:"Present to your family members some fruits on every Friday so that they may rejoice (are delighted with Friday)".
Yawmul-Ijaabah, the day of acceptance. The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) has said:
"Friday is the best of all days of the week. Good (deed) done on Friday earns many rewards and supplications are (also) accepted".
Some of the other names given to Friday are:
Yawmul-Barakah, the day of blessing
Yawmul-Karaamah, the day of honor
Ywamul-Mazeed, the day of abundance
Friday is different from Jewish Saturday (Sabbath) and Christian Sunday. Jews believe that Saturday is primarily a commemoration of God's ending his work and resting on the seventh day. Work is forbidden on this day but there is no mention of prayer or worship. Christians changed the Saturday to Sunday. According to the Holy Qur'an, Allah (SWT) needs no rest, nor does He feel fatigue.
Allah! There is no god save He, the ever-living, the self-subsisting (by whom all subsist). Slumber does not seize Him, nor does sleep. (2:255)
S.V. Mir Ahmad Ali writes in is commentary of the Holy Qur'an:
"Islam says: when the time of Jumua'h prayer comes, discontinue every activity and answer the call to prayer, meet earnestly, pray, consult and learn by social contact; and when the meeting is over, scatter and go about your business
