These are the people who are the subject of several of the hadith. These are the people who count among the holy prophet Muhammad’s most beloved. They are none other than his family, the Banu Hashim, otherwise known as the Sadat.
So why have these blessed people been denied the benefits of Zakat that all other poor sections of Muslims enjoy? Simple. The prophet knew all too well that if he allowed it, most people would prefer to spend their entire Zakat on the poor among the prophets family. He realized that there was a real danger of all the Zakat funds being diverted to his family alone leaving little or nothing for the other sections of the poor. Keeping the welfare and interest of the other poor sections of muslim society in mind the holy prophet declared that zakat would not be halal on the Sadat.
However, love for the blessed Sadat has been declared as a part of a believing and practicing Muslims faith. Let us remind ourselves of a hadith that we may have heard several times before in which our beloved Prophet equated his ummah to the human body and said that even if one small section of the ummah is in pain the entire Muslim community must feel it.
In light of this hadith, it is clear that the responsibility of ensuring the well being of those among the Sadat who can not fend for themselves falls squarely on us.
Our holy prophet spent several nights praying and weeping for the plight of his ummah. Someone asked him on one of these nights what causes him such sorrow. The prophet replied that he weeps for the sins of his ummah. Sadly, it is this same ummah that today turns a blind eye to the plight of the family of the holy prophet. The same prophet who wept and prayed to Allah for the forgiveness of the sins of his ummah.
Another incident relates to Abdullah Ibn Mubark, a revered sage of his time. Abdullah had been saving money for several years so that he could perform the Haj and when he had finally saved enough he declared his intention to go on the pilgrimage that year. When word spread of his intention several people from his tribe decided to join him on his pilgrimage as this was an opportunity for them to perform Haj with such a distinguished scholar as Abdullah Ibn Mubarak.
Of course, Abdullah had set aside the money that he would need to perform the Haj. But before he got on his way he encountered a Sadat widow with two young children who asked him if he knew anyone who could help her as she was of meager means. Immediately Abdullah gave the bag containing all he had saved for the pilgrimage to the woman and retired into isolation as he did not want to face the embarrassment of going back on his declared intention to perform Haj that year.
Months later when people returned from the Haj they started to praise the many sermons he delivered at the years Haj. Abdullah was confused and did not understand how this could be, when he did not actually undertake the Haj. He even thought the comments were sarcastic and intended to hurt him.
That night, he had a dream where the Holy prophet explained to him that his selfless act of parting with his savings for a Sadat family desperately seeking help pleased Allah so much that he ordered an Angel to take Abdullah’s form and perform the Haj and be amongst the people so that no one would miss Abdullah during that years Haj.
The Angel was ordered to perform the Haj not only that year but every year until qayamat on behalf of Abdllah Ibn Mubarak and that this Haj that the angel performed would be considered by Allah as the obligatory Haj that Abdullah Ibn Mubarak intended to perform that year.
This incident shows that any act of kindness towards the Sadat is highly appreciated and greatly rewarded by Allah.
The deep sense of obligation that was felt by the great leaders of the past towards the Sadaat and the responsibilities that the prophet had entrusted them with, is something that is missing in the ummah today and it is this sense of obligation that we as a community must invoke once again, for lack of it has prevented us from acting in a manner that would be considered responsible and prevented us from doing anything about the deplorable and sometimes miserable situation that some of the Sadaat find themselves in today.
The time has come now for us to shoulder the responsibility bestowed upon us by the Holy prophet himself and do our bit to help in uplifting the poor among the Sadat on whom Zakat is forbidden. Here is an opportunity for us to please the messenger of Allah. An opportunity to serve his family, his blood. Surely such actions will not go unrewarded by Allah. We can never hope to do for the Sadat as much as the prophet has done for us. But that should not stop us from trying to wipe off their tears.
'Miratur-Rashad' by Ayatulla As-Shaikh Abdulla Al-Mamkani (t.s) was translated into Urdu by Allama Syed Zeeshan Haider Jawadi and then from Urdu to Gujarati by Janab Yusuf Jigar. In which in the topic Respect for The Progeny of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.)
he said:
Son! Give respect and reverence to the progeny of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) because they are from the family of Janab-e-Fatema (a.s.) and Hazrat Ali (a.s.). Allah has decreed that you love them. As far as possible give them due respect because Allah’s will and good of both the world lie in it.
(Mustadark, p. 400)
Remember their respect should not be confined only to ‘saadaat’ with good character. This order of respect is not meant for ‘Alims’ who do not practice Islam. They don’t deserve respect. But here we are talking about descendants of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) Therefore, their respect is a must. However if by not showing respect, there is likehood of their returning to right path. Then don’t respect them. This is one way of ‘Nahi-anil-munkar’. However, it is better that you respect them in public and advise them in private as in the incident of Ahmed bin Ishak Ashari. Once Husaini bin Hasan Fatemi came to meet him. Since Husain was a drunkard, he refused to meet him. Then, when he was going for Haj pilgrimage, on the way to Samarra, he met Hazrat Imam Askari (a.s.). But Imam did not give him audience. After many request and pleadings when he met the Imam, then Ahmed asked: ‘Son of the prophet, why are you displeased with me?’ The Imam replied: ‘Why did you not meet Husaini bin Hasan?’ Ahmad replied: ‘My intention was to prevent him from drinking wine’. The Imam said : ‘You are right. That is what is meant by ‘Nahi-anil-Mumkar’ but as far as respect for them is concerned, there should be no change.’
Ibne Ishaq kept this is mind and after returning from Haj he gave due respect to Husaini bin Hasan. He got frightened and asked the reason. Ahmed gave him the reason. This made so much impact on him that he asked for Allah’s forgiveness and broke all the wine glasses and threw them. He died in the mosque during ‘Aaiteqaf’.
(Mustadrak-ul-wasael-2, p. 407)
Remember, this advice is not meant for non Fatemi ‘Sadat’ though being Hashemi they also deserve respect but they are not family members of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.). Whenever in doubt, be cautious. Of course, those who are sayyed from mother’s side also deserve respect because they are children of the daughter. Imam Hasan (a.s.) and Imam Husain (a.s.) are prophet’s children because of this relation. People with this type of relations are not entitled to ‘Khums’. According to one reliable tradition from Jamad bin Isa, only those who are sayyed from father’s side are entitled ‘Khums’. Otherwise, they are equal as far respect is concerned. Both should be respected.
Rights of Sadaat:Allama Hilli in his book `Qawaidul Ahkam’ counsels his son Fakhrul Muhaqqiqin in the following words:
“You should practice Sileh Rahmi with the pure descendants of the Sadaat also. The Almighty Allah has emphasized upon this duty so much that he has made the love of relatives of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) as a compensation of the Prophetic mission.”
“…Say: I do not ask of you any reward for it but love for my near relatives….” (Shuara 42:23)
The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said: “I shall intercede for four types of people even if they carry the sins of all humanity: A person who has helped my descendants and progeny; A person who has spent his wealth upon my descendants when they were in need; A person who has loved my Progeny with his tongue and his heart; A person who has considered the wants of my descendants when they were surrounded by enemies and were homeless.
So let us think
Ø Are there no poor people amongst Sadat?
Ø Are there no widows amongst Sadat?
Ø Are there no underprivileged among the Sadat?
Ø Are there no starving children of Sadat?
Ø Are there no orphans amongst them?
Ø Are there no girls among the Sadat whose families cannot afford them a wedding?
Ø Do the children of Sadat not desire to study at the best colleges and universities?
Ø Do they not desire to wear fine clothes on the occasion of Eid?
The answers to all of these questions is a resounding YES.
But the Sadat have always shied away from seeking help or assistance of any kind. But that does not give us the right to ignore their needs. And we have no hesitation in asking our Muslim brothers and sisters to come forward with their generous donations towards this noble cause. Failure to act now will be a matter of shame for the entire Muslim community. Consider that if, our Rasool were to ask us on the Day of Judgment that “my family was amongst you, and in need of help. What have you done for them?” Surely none of us would like to be in a situation where we don’t have an answer to our beloved prophet’s question.
And certainly, we owe it to our prophet and our conscience to initiate action for the betterment of his family and his descendents. It is the duty of the ummah that if they desire to be successful in this life and the next then they shall severe the sadat generously and with the best of intentions. Remember that the prophet himself had asked his ummah to love the sadat and that this is the kind of service that is sure to please our prophet, and will elevate our position in this world and the hereafter as Zakir e Najat.

Duty of sadaat e Fatima(s.a) by Jaan ali kazmi Maulana (video at the top)
- In a interview Maulana zaki Baqri answered.the following
A 17) ZB: Islam has guided us in all aspect of our lives, nothing is unclear, and we as Muslims are unaware of our own religion. Regarding this subject of Khums also the guidance is clear in Islam. How to take out Khums? How to disperse it? To whom it should be given? Etc. The portion of Sadaat should be distributed in accordance with the condition which has been laid down in Islam. Those who seek Sadaat portion meaning those who ask for the Khums money are not the eligible (Mustahaq) Sayyids, they in fact are the beggars they should never be let down according to the Holy Quran: “Nor shall you reprimand the beggar.” (93:10) Those who are Mustahaq we need to search for them, they are very honorable people who are struggling for their livelihood yet still could not reach to their basic needs of their lives. Thus there should be a secret movement consists of the pious and God fearing who desire to serve the Mustahiqeen to seek the pleasures of Allah. Such group should have a representation in each and every street and area of the town and search for the Mustahiqeen (eligible momineen). There must be a list of such people and distribution should be done in secret such that their honor and respect should be protected. The best form of payment is for the education of their children. If we can educate our future generations we will never face economical, political, and social problems.

The one who love Imam e zaman(a.t.f.s) must be prepared to struggle and labour his self, his pen and his wealth in the way of Imam e zaman(a.t.f.s)
I remember the words of Imam (a.s), that we are responsible for the duty, and not for the result. A warm smile washes away the tension of confusion, as I thank Allah for the presence of my friend, whom Allah may protect, and guide
IMAM E ZAMANA (a.f.t.s) Bless you And All Your Family those help others and learn islam.
